The Wizard is still in his pajamas, but is walking around his house, on the phone.
WIZARD

Thanks for calling Aladino. Yes, I’m

still a little sick. But to answer

your question, there is nothing wrong

with your wife. If she wants to work

part time for the Psychic Line, it’s

OK. Many women choose not to stay at

home. Of course Rosalinda works.

She’s the president of Spells-R-Us.
He sees us.
WIZARD(cont’d)

Oh hi,! (to phone) I have to go now.

Welcome back to English For All!

Today’s lesson is about women’s

changing roles.

Women do different things today than

in the past. You will also learn how

to use adverbs of frequency, which

describe how often we do things. These

are words like: always, sometimes and

never. Now, remember what happened to

Marta in the last episode? She was

fired from her job. Well, let’s see

what happens.

FACTORY
Marta is punching in. Cornelio is standing next to the clock. He has an evil grin on his face.
CORNELIO

You’re fired!
He has a look of satisfaction while Marta is in total disbelief. After a good “soap-operaey” pause. She

speaks.
MARTA

Is this a joke?
CORNELIO

Oh, it’s no joke. You were absent

yesterday. You missed work, you’re

fired.
MARTA

I didn’t come in yesterday because I

went to my daughter’s school to talk

to her counselor.
CORNELIO

That’s so sweet! But sorry, you’re

still fired.
MARTA

Mr. Cook gave me permission.
CORNELIO

Maybe Mr. Cook gave you permission,

but I didn’t.
MR. AL COOK, 50’s, walks in.
MR. COOK

What seems to be the problem, Mr.

Flowers?
CORNELIO

Good.... Good morning, Mr. Cook.

Well, Sir, I was letting Marta go.
MR. COOK

Letting her go? Where?
CORNELIO

I’m firing her, Sir.
MR. COOK

Firing her? Why?
CORNELIO

Because she didn’t come to work

yesterday.
MR. COOK

But I gave her permission to take the

day off. Didn’t Dora give you the

message?

He knows he’s been caught.
CORNELIO

Uh...uh. I thought Dora was taking the

day off.
Marta shakes her head in disbelief.
MR. COOK

No, Mr. Flowers. Marta is one of our

best workers. If she takes the day

off, there’s a reason. Now let’s get

back to work.
Marta exits frame. Cornelio is very unhappy. He is 0 for 2 with Marta. But, it’s not over for Cornelio.
LUNCH ROOM
Marta is sitting at a table ready to eat. Dora wants to hear all about the morning’s encounter.
DORA

He blamed it on me?
MARTA

Can you believe that?
DORA

We have to be careful Marta. Sometimes

Cornelio Flores is very strange.
MARTA

I know.
DORA

Hey, so how did it go with Viviana

yesterday?
MARTA

Oh, it was wonderful! I met with her

counselor, Mr. Marquez, and she is now

in a special program for excellent

students.
DORA

Really? So is Juan Carlos! They’re

probably in the same class. I knew our

kids were smart. See, and you wanted

to send Viviana back to Mexico.
Marta smiles.

WORK EXPERIENCE CLASS
VIVIANA

It’s so great you’re in this class

too.
KIM

I know. I wonder who else is in it.
Suddenly, JUAN CARLOS, good looking kid and his friend DREW, another good looking kid, enter. Viviana and Kim both stare.
VIVIANA

Juan Carlos...
KIM

Drew...I think we’re going to like

this class.
JUAN CARLOS

Hi Viviana.
VIVIANA

Hi, Juan Carlos.
JUAN CARLOS

So, you’re in this class too?
VIVIANA

Yes.
JUAN CARLOS

I’m surprised. I thought the class was

for guys only.
Drew snickers.
VIVIANA

What do you mean by that?
JUAN CARLOS

Never mind.
VIVIANA

No. Wait. Are you saying women aren’t

smart enough to be in this class?
Mr. Marquez enters.
MARQUEZ

Welcome everyone. And congratulations.

This is the Work Experience seminar of

the Gifted Program where we will

discuss important everyday topics like

work issues and newsworthy events. Oh,

before I forget I need to hand out

these forms. Your parents need to fill

them out as soon as possible.
He hands Viviana a big pile of forms.
VIVIANA

Wow, why so many forms?
MARQUEZ

We need the forms to keep track of

everything.
VIVIANA

My Mom’s not going to like this.
BENJAMIN’S WORKPLACE
Benjamin is getting fired by his boss, BOB.
BENJAMIN

I can’t help you. I can’t help you?

What do you mean I can’t help you?
BOB

Sorry, Ben. This company cannot

afford irresponsible workers.
BENJAMIN

I am not irresponsible.
BOB

Let’s see. For one, you’re always

late, second, this job sometimes

requires you to wear a hard hat. You

never wear one. Third...
BENJAMIN

Hard hat? Those things look funny.

Besides, I don’t need one. I am

always careful.
BOB

Sorry, Ben. You can’t make your own

rules. I have to let you go.
BENJAMIN

Come on, Bob! Give me one more

chance. I have a lot of bills to pay

and a daughter to support.
Bob gives Benjamin a look.
BOB

Sorry. You had many chances already.

You can pick up your check on the way

out.
Benjamin knows he’s history. He leaves.
Benjamin has just picked up his mail. He gets into the truck. He looks through a pile of bills.
BENJAMIN

Bills, bills and more bills. What’s

this?
He opens the letter.
BENJAMIN (cont’d)

An eviction notice? I have to move out

in thirty days?

Marta and Viviana are at the table. Marta looks at bills and pay stubs. Viviana arrives with the mail.
VIVIANA

Here, more bills.

Oh, no. I don’t have enough time to

take care of everything.
VIVIANA

Oh, Mom. The manager called. The

plumber is coming tomorrow. Will you

be home?
MARTA

(a bit frustrated)

Tomorrow? What time?
VIVIANA

I think he said 11 or so.
MARTA

I can’t be here at that time, and

you’re in school.
VIVIANA

Oh, and before I forget, Mr. Marquez

said you need to fill out these forms.
Hands Marta the thick stack of papers.
MARTA

(more flustered)

Great, I just won’t sleep tonight!
Viviana looks at the phone bill.
VIVIANA

Mom, I can help you if you’d like.
MARTA

That’s OK honey. I’ll find the time.

You worry about school, and I’ll take

care of this.
BENJAMIN’S TRUCK
Viviana closes the truck’s door. She looks worried.
BENJAMIN

What’s the matter today?
VIVIANA

Mom is really having a hard time right

now.
BENJAMIN

Money problems?
VIVIANA

It’s not the money. She doesn’t have

enough time to deal with bills, house

problems, work, plus me. It’s too

much.
BENJAMIN

You’re the genius of the family. Why

don’t you help her?
VIVIANA

I help when I can, but I’m in school.
Benjamin’s squeaky brain wheels turn as he creates a plan.
BENJAMIN

Well, maybe I can offer a little help.
VIVIANA

Really? You can?
BENJAMIN

I think so.
Benjamin has laid down the groundwork.
MARTA’S APARTMENT
Marta getting ready for work. The phone rings. Marta picks up.
MARTA

Hello?
SCHOOL PARKING LOT
He’s on the cell phone.
BENJAMIN

Hello, Marta. It’s Benjamin.
MARTA

Benjamin. What can I do for you?
BENJAMIN

Martita, I need to talk to you. Will

you meet me after work?
MARTA

Why?
BENJAMIN

It’s really important.
MARTA

Ah...
BENJAMIN

Come on Marta. I also really want to

see you.
MARTA

All right. Where?
BENJAMIN

Our favorite place...Happy hour.
MARTA

All right. See you there.
Marta is a bit concerned.
RESTAURANT
We see Marta and Benjamin sitting at a table.
MARTA

OK, Benjamin Alfonso, what’s this

about?
BENJAMIN

Viviana told me about the bills and

the house. She said you are really

busy.
MARTA

(defensive)

We don’t need money, Benjamin.
BENJAMIN

(you don’t but I do)

Oh, I know, I know! It’s time. You

need more time and there aren’t enough

hours in the day.
MARTA

True. It’s hard sometimes.
BENJAMIN

Let me help. Listen, I’m about to buy

a new house, and my lease is up at my

apartment. Why don’t you let me move

in with you for a couple of months?

I’ll help you.
MARTA

Move in?! I don’t think so...
BENJAMIN

Come on, Marta. Why not? Just for a

couple of months. I promise I will

cook, I will make sure all your bills

get paid, and I will even keep the

house clean.
Marta thinks about it for a moment.

WIZARD

And freeze! What do you think Marta

will do? Will she let Benjamin move

back in with her? Before we find out

let’s learn about adverbs.
We see the word “adverb” appear.
WIZARD(cont’d)

An adverb is a word that adds meaning

to the verb. The verb is the action

word. The adverb describes that

action. Adverbs of frequency tell us

how often, or how many times an action

happens. Look at this chart.
We see a chart with the words “always, often, sometimes, seldom and never.” A line goes through these words with 100% on “always” to 0% on “never.”
WIZARD(cont’d)

When we say “always” we mean the

action happens all the time or 100% of

the time. Watch and listen.
BENJAMIN

Hard hat? Those things look funny.

Besides, I don’t need one. I am

always careful.
WIZARD

When we say “often,” we mean many

times, or 70-80% of the time.
MR. COOK

She often works during lunch.

WIZARD

The adverb “sometimes” means the

action or situation happens about 50%

of the time. Take a look.
DORA

Sometimes Mr. Cornelio is very

strange.
WIZARD

When we say “seldom,” we mean almost

never, or 10-20% of the time. And

when we say “never,” we mean 0% of the

time. Watch closely.
BOB

...two, you seldom do your paperwork

right. And three, you never wear a

hard-hat.
14.4.2

  • Read, understand and practice

Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency are words that tell us how often an action occurs. These are words like never, seldom, sometimes, often and always. Use the following chart as reference:

Never 0% of the time

Seldom 10-20% of the time

Sometimes 30-50% of the time

Usually 50-60% of the time

Often 60-80% of the time

Always 100% of the time

For example:

  • Cornelio never rides the bus. We are saying Cornelio does not ride the bus at all.

  • They often eat at that restaurant. This means that they eat at that restaurant about 60-80% of the time.

  • Use the % numbers as a general reference.

GRAMATICA

MARTA

OK, Benjamin. Maybe it will be all

right. I can use some help. You can

move in as soon as you are ready. But

don’t get any ideas.
Benjamin scores another victory.
MARTA’S HOUSE
THREE MONTHS LATER. The house is a mess. Benjamin is on the couch eating a bag of chips and watching TV. Viviana does her homework. Marta brings Benjamin his dinner.
BENJAMIN

TV dinner again?
MARTA

I don’t have time to cook, Benjamin. I

thought you said you would do some of
