Scope and Limitation

The research study entitled “THE CONSTRUCTION OF IMPROVISED INCUBATOR FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CHICKEN EGGS.HEAT SOURCE; MAHOGANY” focuses only in improving the survival rate of the chicken eggs.

The study will be conducted by Mary Leen Pearl D. Gonzales and Connie Elaine D. Gumacal. This study will be limited only in the production of the chicken eggs and was incubated for twenty-one (21) days at the room temperature of 25-30°C. This study was conducted in Dumangas ,Iloilo, from July 2011 to January 2012. Two treatments will be done namely; treatment A :Improvised Incubator (Control) and treatment B: Commercial Incubator. Three trials will be conducted.

Definition of Key Terms

Incubator- heated container for hatching eggs. Incubators maintain a constant temperature and a constant humidity level.

Chicken Eggs- oval body from which young of chickens. The eggs most eaten by humans are those of the domestic hen, but duck eggs and the eggs of other birds are also commonly used as food.

Mahogany- is a genus of trees in the chinaberry family,Meliaceae.. It occurs natively in the Neotropics from southern Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America south to Bolivia.

It is usually taken to consist of three species, geographically separated. They are medium-sized to large trees growing to 20–45 m tall, and up to 2 m trunk diameter. The leaves are 10–30 cm long, pinnate, with 3-6 pairs of leaflets, the terminal leaflet absent; each leaflet is 5–15 cm long. The leaves are deciduous to semi-evergreen, falling shortly before the new foliage grows. The flowers are produced in loose inflorescences each flower small, with five white to greenish-yellowish petals. Thefruit is a pear-shaped five-valved capsule 8–20 cm long, containing numerous winged seeds about 5–9 cm long.

Heat- is the process of energy from one body or system. Heat is needed by the eggs to survive. Heat provided by the incubator.

Temperature- a degree of hotness or coldness. The measured of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance. An average temperature of 32° degrees is heated by the eggs to survive.

Thermostat- is a component of a control system which regulates the temperature of a system so that the system’s temperature is maintained near desired temperature.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Incubation

Incubation is the process by which birds hatch their eggs, and to the development of the embryo within the egg. The most vital factor of incubation is the constant temperature required of its development over a specific period. It’s not just a matter of heating eggs until they hatch or using any incubator you can grab of. Every stage of growth, from the first cell stage to the full chick requires a perfect sequence of developmental events. Any interruption of these events will alter the development that follows. Incubation is a process that determines the quality and vitality of day- old fighting chicks that will ultimately determine the Technical Performance of your fighting cocks.

the maintenance of uniform conditions of temperature and humidity to ensure the development of eggs or, under laboratory conditions, of certain experimental organisms, especially bacteria. The phrase incubation period designates the time from the commencement of incubation to hatching. It also is the time between the infection of an animal by a disease organism and the first appearance of symptoms.

Controlled incubation is practiced by a few snakes (i.e., pythons), all birds, and monotremes (platypus and echidna). Usually the temperature of the eggs is maintained by body heat, but a few species use decaying vegetation, solar heat, or even volcanic heat.

MYTHODOLOGY

Materials:

2 pcs. Cooking oil container

1 pc. Good lumber 1x1 or 1x2

1 meter Wire mesh Screen ¼ x 3feet

½ meter plastic cover or glass

Mahogany Fruits

Rear fan

Digital thermometer

General Procedures

  1. Collection and preparation of Materials

  2. The Design and Creation of Incubator

  3. Location of the Incubator

  4. Incubation Procedures

  1. Collection and preparation of Materials

Appropriated materials were gathered which are to be used in making a conventional incubator. The cooking oil cans were bought at Dumangas Public Market. The lumber was bought at Aaliyah Hardware. The chicken eggs were bought at Bnga. Saudi Jardin ,Dumangas, Iloilo. And the first glass was bought in Passi City, Iloilo, and the second glass was bought at _____________.

.II. The Design and Creation of Incubator

Cooking oil container was cut into it’s desired design. A wooden frame was installed to the rectangular opening in can where wire mesh screen is to be attached. The wire mesh screen flooring was gapped and wire mesh screen will be filled by water to regulate the incubator. A hole was dented on the upper left side of the incubator for exhaust fan. Dent a hole under the incubator approximately a half inch diameter to serve as a drain for water. A plug was installed to stop water from spilling at the back portion of a box where blower will be installed (screen walled size). It provide heat to the process. A glass sliding door at the front was installed so that inside portion will always be visible. Finally the mahogany fruit will be able to put at the back part of the improvised incubator to supply heat in it.

III. Location of the Incubator

The Incubator was located in a room in which the temperature is between 25° degrees to 30° degrees Celsius.

IV. Incubation

The Mahogany Fruit was placed at the back of the Incubator. The temperature inside the Incubator reached up to 37° degrees Celsius to 39° degrees Celsius.

After 6 hours, the eggs were turned first thing on the morning; at noon and last thing at night. Turning of eggs starts on the first day through 16th day . After 10 days, parts of the embryo that would be able to see through candling were the head, the eyes, and they’ll appear as a dark object.

Chick started to pop out the shell around 18th day. Most eggs are hatched by the 21st day. Then the temperature was lowered approximately 35 degrees. This permits the newly hatched chick to dry off. Results were obtained after the 21st day to the 22nd day.

The incubation procedures in the Improvised Incubator were also employed at the same time in the Commercial Incubator excluding the heating process.
