SECTION 238126 - SPLIT-SYSTEM AIR-CONDITIONERS

This Section may include provisions for LEED 2009, LEED v4, ASHRAE 189.1, IgCC, and Green Globes. Note that some sustainable design requirements are either mandatory or optional requirements. Other requirements that are associated with sustainable design, and may be considered "best practice" or retained even if a sustainable design standard is not a project requirement, are discussed in the Evaluations. Verify, with manufacturers, that the requirements for prerequisites and credits can be met. To achieve prerequisites and obtain credits, HVAC system design alternatives that do not include split-system air conditioners may be required.

Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

A.Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2SUMMARY

A.Section includes variable capacity, split-system heat-pump and air-conditioning system, consisting of single outdoor condensing unit, and controls.

1.3ACTION SUBMITTALS

A.Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include rated capacities, operating characteristics, and furnished specialties and accessories. Include performance data in terms of capacities, outlet velocities, static pressures, sound power characteristics, motor requirements, and electrical characteristics.

B.Sustainable Design Submittals:

Product data subparagraph below applies to LEED 2009 NC, CI, CS, and LEED for Schools Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite 3, "Fundamental Refrigerant Management." Coordinate with requirements for equipment and refrigerants.

1.Product Data for EA Prerequisite 3, "Fundamental Refrigerant Management": For refrigerants, indicating compliance with refrigerant management practices.

2.Product Data: For energy performance.

C.Shop Drawings: Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work.

1.Detail equipment assemblies and indicate dimensions, weights, loads, required clearances, method of field assembly, components, and location and size of each field connection.

Retain subparagraph below if equipment includes wiring.

2.Wiring Diagrams: For power, signal, and control wiring.

D.Samples for Initial Selection: For units with factory-applied color finishes.

1.4INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

A.Field quality-control reports.

B.Warranty: Sample of special warranty.

1.5CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A.Operation and Maintenance Data: For split-system heat-pump and air-conditioning systems to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. Service and installation manuals must be readily available on the manufacturer’s website without entering a username and password.

1.6MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS

A.Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.

1.Filters: [One] <Insert number> set(s) for each air-handling unit.

2.Gaskets: [One] <Insert number> set(s) for each access door.

3.Fan Belts: [One] <Insert number> set(s) for each air-handling unit fan.

1.7QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.

B.ASHRAE Compliance:

1.Fabricate and label refrigeration system to comply with ASHRAE 15, "Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems."

"ASHRAE Compliance" Subparagraph below may be required to comply with Project requirements or authorities having jurisdiction. LEED 2009 Prerequisite IEQ 1and LEED v4 IEQ Prerequisite Minimum Indoor Air Quality Performance require compliance with requirements in ASHRAE 62.1. Besides establishing minimum ventilation rates, ASHRAE 62.1 includes requirements for controls, surfaces in contact with the airstream, particulate and gaseous filtration, humidification and dehumidification, drain pan construction and connection, finned-tube coil selection and cleaning, and equipment access. See "Sustainable Design Considerations" Article in the Evaluations for discussion on this prerequisite. Verify, with manufacturers, availability of units with components and features that comply with these requirements.

2.ASHRAE Compliance: Applicable requirements in ASHRAE 62.1, Section 4 - "Outdoor Air Quality," Section 5 - "Systems and Equipment," Section 6 - " Procedures," and Section 7 - "Construction and System Start-up."

"ASHRAE/IES Compliance" Paragraph below may be required to comply with Project requirements or authorities having jurisdiction. LEED 2009 Prerequisite EA 2 and LEED v4 EA Prerequisite Minimum Energy Performance require minimum efficiency equal to requirements in ASHRAE/IES 90.1. See "Sustainable Design Considerations" Article in the Evaluations for discussion on this prerequisite.

C.ASHRAE/IES Compliance: Applicable requirements in ASHRAE/IES 90.1.

1.8COORDINATION

Retain first paragraph below if remote condensing units are located on grade; retain second paragraph if they are located on roof.

A.Coordinate sizes and locations of concrete bases with actual equipment provided. Cast anchor-bolt inserts into bases. Concrete, reinforcement, and formwork are specified in Section 033000 "Cast-in-Place Concrete."

B.Coordinate sizes and locations of roof curbs, equipment supports, and roof penetrations with actual equipment provided.

1.9WARRANTY

When warranties are required, verify with Owner's counsel that special warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws. Coordinate with Section 016000 "Product Requirements."

A.Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of split-system heat-pump and air-conditioning systems that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

Verify available warranties and warranty periods for units and components with manufacturers listed in Part 2.

1.Warranty Period:

a.For Compressor: [One] [Five] <Insert number> year(s) from date of Substantial Completion.

A.Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Samsung HVAC; CAC Single Zone System or comparable products by one of the following:

2.2RECESSED, CEILING-MOUNTED (360 CASSETTE) INDOOR UNIT

A.Basis-of-Design Product: Samsung HVAC; Recessed indoor unit, ceiling-mounted cassette, 360 degree air distribution pattern, for use with CAC systems, model AC0**KN4DCH/AA, with ceiling grille model PC4N**MAN.

B.Description: Factory-assembled[ and -tested] complete unit with components, piping, wiring, and controls required for mating to piping, power, and control board with field connections.

C.Cabinet:

1.Material: Galvanized steel frame with high impact plastic chassis and fascia, UL 94 V-0 flammability rating.

2.Mounting: Manufacturer-designed provisions for field installation.

3.Internal Access: Removable panels of adequate size for field access to internal components for inspection, cleaning, service, and replacement.

4.Outside Air Intake: Knockout panel for outside ventilation air. Requires outside air ventilation kit.

D.DX Coil Assembly:

1.Construction: Nonferrous construction, slit fins coated with hydrophilic paint on copper tubing.

2.Coil Tubes: Copper with internal grooves.

3.Internal Tubing: Copper tubing with brazed joints.

4.Internal Tubing Insulation: Manufacturer's standard insulation, of thickness to prevent condensation.

5.Field Piping Connections: Manufacturer's standard.

6.Factory Charge: Dehydrated air or nitrogen.

7.Testing: Factory pressure tested and verified to be without leaks.

E.Drain Assembly:

1.Pan: Non-ferrous material, with bottom sloped to low point drain connection.

2.Condensate Removal: Unit-mounted condensate pump with check valve, with a maximum vertical lift of 29 inches (737 mm).

3.Condensate Float Switch: Disable unit operation in the event of condensate overflow.

4.Field Piping Connection: Non-ferrous material.

F.Fan and Motor Assembly:

1.Fan: Direct-drive turbo fan arrangement driven by a single motor statically and dynamically balanced.

2.Construction: Fabricated from non-ferrous components.

3.Motor: Brushless dc or electronically commutated with permanently lubricated bearings.

4.Motor Protection: Integral protection against thermal, overload, and voltage fluctuations.

5.Speed Settings and Control: Three or more speed settings with a speed range of least 50 percent.

6.Vibration Control: Integral isolation to dampen vibration transmission.

G.Filter Assembly:

1.Access: Included with fascia panel, to accommodate filter replacement without the need for tools.

2.Media: Washable, electrostatic filter.

3.Efficiency: <Insert efficiency>.

H.Air Outlet Assembly: Fascia panel mounted in bottom of unit cabinet[, square with circular air outlet for installation in finished ceilings][, round with circular air outlet for exposed installation]. Color: Black or white.

1.Discharge Pattern Adjustment: Fixed or auto-swing direction, 10 to 60 degree angle, with wireless, touch, or premium wired controller.

2.Independent Discharge Pattern: Independent air distribution control with wireless or premium wired controller (10 to 60 degree control range in three directions).

3.Internal Booster Fan: Three internal booster fans create an area of low pressure outside the air outlet opening causing the air to change direction.

4.Return-Air Inlet: Manufacturer's standard grille in bottom of fascia panel.

I.Unit Accessories:

1.Outdoor Air Ventilation Kit: Field-installed on outside air connection with booster fan, 12 V dc relay, and controls to introduce outside ventilation air to the indoor unit.

2.Remote Room Temperature Sensor Kit: Wall-mounted, hardwired room temperature sensor kit for use in rooms that do not have room temperature measurement.

7.Supplemental Heat: External heater control programming capability for supplemental heat via external contact control module, requires an accessory PCB.
