SECTION 090561.13 - MOISTURE VAPOR EMISSION CONTROL

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

A.Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2SUMMARY

A.Section includes fluid-applied, resin-based, membrane-forming systems that control the moisture-vapor-emission rate of high-moisture, interior concrete to prepare it for floor covering installation.

1.3DEFINITIONS

Retain terms that remain after this Section has been edited for a project.

A.MVE: Moisture vapor emission.

B.MVER: Moisture vapor emission rate.

1.4ACTION SUBMITTALS

A.Product Data: For each type of product.

B.Sustainable Design Submittals:

"Product Data" Subparagraph below applies to LEED 2009 NC, CI, and CS; LEED v4; IgCC; ASHRAE 189.1; and Green Globes. Coordinate with requirements for paints and coatings.

1.Product Data: For coatings, indicating VOC content.

"Laboratory Test Reports" Subparagraph below applies to LEED 2009 for Schools, LEED v4, IgCC, ASHRAE 189.1, and Green Globes. Coordinate with requirements for paints and coatings.

1.5INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

Coordinate "Qualification Data" Paragraph below with qualification requirements in Section 014000 "Quality Requirements" and as may be supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.

A.Qualification Data: For Installer.

B.Product Test Reports: Submit manufacturer’s product data and installation instructions for each material and product used. Include manfacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheets.

Retain "Preinstallation testing reports" Paragraph below if Contractor is responsible for preinstallation testing.

C.Preinstallation testing reports.

1.6QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Provide products of this section by companies which have successfully specialized in production of this type of work for not less than 5 years..

Installation of the ARDEX product must be completed by a factory trained applicator, such as an ARDEX LevelMaster Elite® or ARDEX Choice Contractor, using mixing equipment and tools approved by the manufacturer. Please contact ARDEX Engineered Cements (724) 203-5000 for a list of recommended installers.

B.Installer Qualifications: An authorized representative who is factory trained and approved by manufacturer.

1.7DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.Deliver materials in original packages and containers, with seals unbroken, bearing manufacturer's labels indicating directions for storage and mixing with other components.

B.Handle products in accordance with manufacturer's printed recommendations.

1.8FIELD CONDITIONS

A.Environmental Limitations: Comply with MVE-control system manufacturer's written instructions for substrate and ambient temperatures, humidity, ventilation, and other conditions affecting system installation.

1.Store system components in a temperature-controlled environment and protected from weather and at ambient temperature of not less than 50 deg F (10 deg C) and not more than 85 deg F (29.4 deg C) at least 48 hours before use.

2.Maintain ambient temperature and relative humidity in installation areas within range recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer, but not less than 65 deg F (18 deg C) or more than 85 deg F (29.4 deg C) and not less than 40 or more than 60 percent relative humidity, for 48 hours before installation, during installation, and for 48 hours after installation unless longer period is recommended in writing by manufacturer.

3.Install MVE-control systems where concrete surface temperatures will remain a minimum of 5 deg F (3 deg C) higher than the dew point for ambient temperature and relative humidity conditions in installation areas for 48 hours before installation, during installation, and for 48 hours after installation unless longer period is recommended in writing by manufacturer.

When warranties are required, verify with Owner's counsel that warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

1.9WARRANTY

A.Manufacturer's Special Warranty: Manufacturer and factory-trained Installer agree to repair or replace MVE-control system product that fails in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

Certified applicator must file a pre-installation checklist with the manufacturer and receive written confirmation of the approval to proceed in order to obtain the extended ARDEX MC™ RAPID Warranty. Upon receipt and approval of the pre-installation checklist, a 25-year ARDEX MC™ RAPID Warranty is available for ARDEX LevelMaster Elite® Installers and a 20-year ARDEX MC™ RAPID Warranty is available for factory-trained installers.

1.Warranty Period: [20] [25] years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

Manufacturers and products listed in SpecAgent and Masterworks Paragraph Builder are neither recommended nor endorsed by the AIA or ARCOM. Before inserting names, verify that manufacturers and products listed there comply with requirements retained or revised in descriptions and are both available and suitable for the intended applications. For definitions of terms and requirements for Contractor's product selection, see Section 016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Paragraph below applies to LEED v4.

A.Flooring products shall comply with the requirements of the California Department of Public Health's "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers."

B.MVE-Control System Capabilities: Capable of suppressing MVE without failure where installed on concrete that exhibits the following conditions:

1.Relative Humidity: Maximum 100 percent when tested according to ASTM F 2170 using in situ probes.

C.Water-Vapor Transmission: Through MVE-control system, maximum 0.06 perm (3.45 ng/Pa x s x sq. m) when tested according to ASTM E 96/E 96M.

2.2MVE-CONTROL SYSTEM

A.Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide ARDEX Americas; ARDEX MC™ RAPID One-Coat Moisture Control System for Concrete to Receive ARDEX Underlayments or a comparable product by one of the following:

1.Advanced Moisture Control, Inc.

2.BASF Corporation.

3.Dependable, LLC.

4.Floor Seal Technology, Inc.

5.KOSTER American Corporation.

6.MAPEI Corporation.

7.Synthetics International.

8.<Insert manufacturer’s name>.

B.MVE-Control System: ASTM F 3010-qualified, fluid-applied, two-component, epoxy-resin, membrane-forming system; formulated for application on concrete substrates to reduce MVER to level required for installation of floor coverings indicated and acceptable to manufacturers of floor covering products indicated, including adhesives.

1.Cementitious Underlayment Primer: If required for subsequent installation of cementitious underlayment products, provide MVE-control system manufacturer's primer to ensure adhesion of products to MVE-control system.

2.3ACCESSORIES

A.Patching and Leveling Material: Moisture-, mildew-, and alkali-resistant product recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer and with minimum of [3000-psi (20.68-MPa)] <Insert pressure> compressive strength after 28 days when tested according to ASTM C 109/C 109M.

B.Crack-Filling Material: High-modulus, low viscosity, fully ridged, 100 percent solids material recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer for sealing concrete substrate crack repair.

Verify warranty requirements with manufacturers. ARDEX's warranty requires use of their cementitious underlayment over the cured MVE-control system membrane to ensure that the membrane is protected if removal and replacement of floor covering materials occurs during the warranty period. Alternatively, specify cementitious underlayment in Section 035413 "Gypsum Cement Underlayment" or Section 035416 "Hydraulic Cement Underlayment."

C.Cementitious Underlayment: If required to maintain manufacturer's warranty, provide MVE-control system manufacturer's [gypsum] [hydraulic] cement-based underlayment.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1EXAMINATION

A.Examine substrates and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for maximum moisture content, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.

B.Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

1.Installation of system indicates acceptance of surfaces and conditions.

3.2PREPARATION

Preinstallation moisture testing of substrates not required prior to applying ARDEX MC RAPID product.

Contact an ARDEX Americas Manufacturer Representative prior to beginning installation.

A.Concrete Substrates: Prepare and clean substrates according to MVE-control system manufacturer's written instructions to ensure adhesion of system to concrete.

1.Prior to proceeding, refer to ASTM F710 Stand Practice for Preparing Concrete Floors to Receive Resilient Flooring. All concrete subfloors must be sound. Solid and clean, and free of all oil, grease, dirt, curing compounds, any substance that might act as a bond breaker, including coatings and other substances that are incompatible with MVE-control system and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, using mechanical methods recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer. Do not use solvents.

2.Provide concrete surface profile complying with ICRI 310.2R CSP 3 by shot blasting using apparatus that abrades the concrete surface with shot, contains the dispensed shot within the apparatus, and recirculates the shot by vacuum pickup.

3.After shot blasting, repair damaged and deteriorated concrete according to MVE-control system manufacturer's written instructions.

4.Protect substrate voids and joints to prevent resins from flowing into or leaking through them.

5.Fill surface depressions and irregularities with patching and leveling material.

6.Fill surface cracks, grooves, control joints, and other nonmoving joints with crack-filling material.

7.Allow concrete to dry, undisturbed, for period recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer after surface preparation, but not less than 24 hours.

8.Before installing MVE-control systems, broom sweep and vacuum prepared concrete.

B.Protect walls, floor openings, electrical openings, door frames, and other obstructions during installation.

3.3INSTALLATION

A.General: Install MVE-control system according to ASTM F 3010 and manufacturer's written instructions to produce a uniform, monolithic surface free of surface deficiencies such as pin holes, fish eyes, and voids.

1.Install primers as required to comply with manufacturer's written instructions.

B.Do not apply MVE-control system across substrate expansion, isolation, and other moving joints.

C.Apply system, including component coats if any, in thickness recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer using mixing equipment and tools approved by the manufacturer.

D.Cure MVE-control system components according to manufacturer's written instructions. Prevent contamination or other damage during installation and curing processes.

E.After curing, examine MVE-control system for surface deficiencies. Repair surface deficiencies according to manufacturer's written instructions.

Retain paragraph below if cementitious underlayment is specified in Part 2.

F.Install cementitious underlayment over cured membrane if required to maintain manufacturer's warranty.

Retain FIELD QUALITY CONTROL Article when testing bag/units of MVE-control system product is required.

3.4FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A.Retain "Testing Agency" Paragraph below to identify who shall perform installation inspections. Testing Agency: [Owner will engage] [Engage] a qualified independent testing agency to perform installation inspections.

When field sampling of MVE-control system product is to required, have Testing Agency take one unopened bag/unit of MVE-control system product being installed to an independent testing facility and perform testing. There is no in-situ test method applicable for ARDEX MVE-control system product.

B.Testing: Test and inspect one random unopened bag of MVE-control system product according to ASTM F 3010.

3.5PROTECTION

A.Protect MVE-control system from damage, wear, dirt, dust, and other contaminants before floor covering installation. Use protective methods and materials, including temporary coverings, recommended in writing by MVE-control system manufacturer.
