Not so easy to setup - in fact a nightmare without a manual and even then it can take some working out with all its parameters and also ins and outs..digital settings.I am a hardcore tweaker and even this made me sweat.Once its setup and you have signals in and out its cool - east to call up patches and send one patch through another .Its also easy or fairly easy to then us vsig and create modular fx patches ! ( and yes its amazing for that ......)

Sound Quality : 10

well its REALLY clean sounding.Forget getting H3000 grainyness out of it......this is much cleaner - more digital and maybe colder ? i dont know but i find with this that a good warm signal through this sounds great but a digital signal can just be cold x 2.......having siad this when you fire sounds through this they come out a few thousand dollars better of in some sense......its fx are really stunning.....stunning isnt the word , ive created stuff like a Pcm70 patche through 8 x pitchsifters and then through a dimension d patch and then an emt reverb patch and with all those settings and tweaking you can make one hi hat sound like another world.......its amazing and jawdropping for space music , sound design etc. I wish it were a tad warmer......but having said that this is a crystal machine.

Reliability : 10

Seems solid......i wont tempt fate but it seems cool

Customer Support : 10

They seem cool , every question i had got answered within 1 day.

Overall Rating : 8

has to be a 9 i think - 1 off for lack of early warm the older units had but 9 for the fact this can do multi fx like NOTHING else......delays through delays through delays and back again.......just use vsig and pc or mac and create or unpack factory patches and make combinations ..... it is stunning.I bought this after selling a kyma system ( which i bought for modular space fx )The eventide just does stuff to signals that make them sound like they came from the future......with some brain power and work its the ultimate 'space designer ' and special fx device.A sine wave and this machine can create a entire cosmos.

And is it worth the $$$$$$? well i think it has the edge in quality.......the reverbs sound like they are Costly !.........people go WHATS that fx unit on that sound ? the older units have a grainy charm but this machines really more about crystaline spaces and complex walls of sound , pure effects and complex clusters of colours.

If you own a pcm 70 and space echo etc etc and think - sell these and buy this then dont.......it can mimik those machines but about 75% at best.......its not good for that and have a sound of its own.

A great machine. But VERY difficult to understand out of the box.

Manual is written like no other effects unit. It is complex as it assumes you are in tune with Eventide's language. You really have to hang on and keep RTFM as it slowly becomes evident. Be patient if you can.

Editing presets in depth via the front panel? Forget it. You will need Vsig (free) If you are performing general changes the front panel does suffice.

This is one expensive machine and is probably out of reach for most but if you can afford it it will be your last purchase. With its open platform technology it shouldn't be redundant for many years to come.

This review is aimed at guitarists as I can only comment in this field.

I use it in a live guitar rig and nothing touches it in terms of quality.

For live use you will need a midi pedal board that has extensive programming capability. I use a Behringer FCB1010. One cheap midi footboard but for programming options this is the leader. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fcb1010/for the best support available anywhere. There are firmware updates that are not Behringer official but exude control like no other board. Mike Riley and Ossandust of this group are outstanding individuals. What they do for no cost is amazing.

For me using The H8000A for live patch changes without dropouts is now achievable using the above midiboard. The H8000 has presets called "virtual racks" and it is these prestes that allow changes with no dropouts.

With OS 4.5 the H8000 has programmable custom harmony ability. With this now being avaiable on the H8000 it is the best multi effects unit in the world today.

Delays, Reverbs,Compression,Tuner,Phaser,Flangers,Samplers,EQs are simply stunning. The distortion and overdrive presets whilst on paper look first rate they do not sound that great. Any guitarist purchasing a H8000 would already have a decent rig so these sounds are likely to be non-relevant to them. It is still good to have the option though.

Many people regard other company products to be very good, all I can say is purchase a H8000 and you will soon change your mind.

Being as complex as it is be prepared for the occassional lock up.
This is not to put you off but to make you aware it isn't fool proof YET?. I use it live and I haven't had a problem changing programs via the midi pedalboard but at home programming via the front panel it does lock up sometimes. New OS releases will hopefully correct this to be 100% reliable.

Backup? Not financially viable for most. Being reaslistic, the cost of this unit should make it fool proof with no need of a back up.

Each person's experience is different with this so you will need to live it yourself to appreciate it.

Eventide have delivered the product in spades and I tip my hat to them as they have worked extremely hard to make this machine a reality.

Overall Rating : 10

In closing I have placed reviews for other Eventide products I owned and whilst some of the issues have been addressed there are still a few to go.

In my opinion the H8000 is the 'ONLY' Eventide worth purchasing as it delivers what most people would expect from an Eventide product.

The capability of this machine is staggering. The longer you own it the more you realise it can do.The possibilities are endless for any guitarist using the H8000A.

I am available to answer anyone's questions regarding the H8000 for live use by a guitarist so feel free to drop me a line.

Ease of Use : 8

It took me about an hour (45 minutes reading the manual) to get the H8000 configured correctly.

The manual is good but what this unit needs is a "players guide" - some real-world setup and configuration information for musicians.

The presets (over 1,000!) have very good default settings.

The H8000 can be programmed using a PC or Mac based visual editor (VSIG or vSigX).

Sound Quality : 10

I use the H8000 as a studio guitar processor for direct recording.

Here is my signal path:

Guitar(s) -> Mesa Boogie Triaxis -> Palmer PGA-05 (Speaker Simulator) ->
Eventide H8000 -> MOTU 828mkII -> Power Mac G5 running Logic Pro 7.0

The sound quality of the delays and reverbs is stunning. The pitch shifter tracks flawlessly and is a big improvement over the Eventide Eclipse.

The looping algorithms on the H8000 are ideal for ambient and textural work - 174 seconds mono or 87 seconds stereo sample/delay.

I have posted a sample created entirely with the H8000 to
http://www.simonmorrison.com
The sample is named (appropriately) H8000.mp3

The sample uses standard unmodified H8000 presets:
DSP A: #6625 "Searing Lead"
DSP B: #6918 "September Canons"
The DSPs are run in parallel, then the output is summed.
This is a raw single-pass (1 track) direct recording!!!

Reliability : 10

No problems so far.

I called Eventide with a technical question before buying the H8000 - the call was routed to an engineer who answered my question immediately!

Eventide also has an excellent web-based support group at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eventidehelps
Italo De Angelis is very responsive, and incredibly knowledgeable.

Overall Rating : 10

I have been searching for the "holy grail" of rack-mounted guitar processors - I don't like having dozens of effects boxes all over the floor! I have a TC Electronic G-Force and Eventide Eclipse, which are both great units, but they don't offer the same flexibility and raw processing power as the H8000.

The H8000 has 2 DSPs that can be run in parallel, in series or in monolithic tandem mode.
Each DSP can run extremely complex programs. Combining 2 programs (in parallel or series) creates some spectacular sounds!

I highly recommend this unit.

It is not an easy machine, but it should not. it had such a flexibility and power, that it can't be easy. After setting my system up and running it works great.

Editing patches is the real fun part. There are lots of factory presets, but building your own algorythm is only possible with the bigger Eventide machines and really really cool. I even rebuild a dimension D like sound inside VSIG.

The manual is okay. But there are a lot of them because this machine is deep. As I recall, there is an users manual, Vsig manual, some tutorals about learning VSIG ect.

Latest software thanks to eventidehelps.

This effectmachine rules! Far better than the other machines I have and/or heared. Totally different from the typical Lex sound, but that is now grainy to my ears. The reverbs and the remakes of old standards are great. AMS RMX, EMT plates, DynaMypiano, PCM 70 hall, and a lot more. And that is beside the great H8000 new patches. some of the new reverbs are amazing.

There are about 50-100 different ways to make a chorus in this machine. There is a lot tto choose from and there is alway one that fits.

My setup? Recording studio Nuendo based with lynx aes 16, genelec 1037 monitoring, cranesong spider, distressor, neumann, telefunken, an old motu 2408, Adats etc.

Reliability : No Opinion

I have it about a month ar so, so I do not really know. I had some noises and lockups, but after restarting the machine is back in business

The word: Eventidehelps. Amazing help there from a devoted Italo de Angelis. When buying the 8000, after registration they send a free upgrade card and pcmcia/CFC card adapter. Amazing. Upgrades are free till now. Most other software and hardware manufacturers ask a lot of money for that or just let you buy another machine.

Overall Rating : 10

Cool machine, now the heart of my recording studio. When compared to the Lex and the TC it has more flexibility and better sound quality at a lower price. What else would you want more?

And I simply know that this machine will stay here till 2024. With Vsig I know I can build almost everything I want.
