Central HVAC Equipment


PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes: This section specifies a thru-the-wall packaged heating and air conditioning unit for the multi-family residential construction industry.

1.2 REFERENCES

A. Definitions:

1. SPVU: Single Packaged Vertical Unit is a description of a specific type of packaged air-conditioning unit as defined by the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

Specifier Note: This section does not require compliance with standard(s). It is a listing of all references used in this section. Only include here standards referenced in the body of the specification in PARTS 1, 2 and/or 3. Do not include references to building codes at any level.

a. UL 1995 Heating and Cooling Equipment.

Specifier Note: Article below includes submittal of relevant data to be furnished by contractor before, during or after construction. Coordinate this article with Architect’s and contractor’s duties and responsibilities in Contract Conditions and Section 01 33 00 - Submittal Procedures.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Manufacturer’s standard specifications and descriptive literature, including:

1. Catalog pages and cut-sheets illustrating specified products.

2. Manufacturer’s installation instruction manual.

3. Shop drawings showing metal thicknesses, dimensions, reinforcing and finishing and including wiring and piping diagrams.

Specifier Note: Coordinate article below with Contract Conditions and with Section 01 78 36 - Warranties.

B. Warranty: Fully executed, issued in [Owner’s] name and registered with manufacturer, including:

1. Manufacturer’s Warranty from date of warranty registration and covering defects in materials: 5 year warranty parts; 5 year warranty compressor and 10 year warranty heat exchanger.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer: HVAC installer, experienced in performing work similar to that required for this project.

B. Operation and Maintenance: Provide technical documentation showing equipment operation, wiring diagrams and list of replacement parts for incorporation into owner’s operations and maintenance manuals in accordance with Section [01 78 23 - Operations and Maintenance Data].

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE & HANDLING

A. Deliver materials in accordance with manufacturer’s written instructions.

1. Deliver materials in manufacturer’s original, unopened, undamaged containers with identification labels intact and product name and manufacturer clearly visible.

2. Store materials protected from exposure to harmful environmental conditions, clean, dry, frost-free and at recommended temperature and humidity levels.

1.6 WARRANTY

A. Project Warranty: Refer to Contract Conditions for project warranty provisions.

B. Manufacturer’s warranty: Submit, for Owner’s acceptance, manufacturer’s standard warranty document executed by authorized company official.

1. Manufacturer’s warranty is in addition to and not intended to limit other rights owner may have under Contract Conditions.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

Specifier Note: Add product attributes performance characteristics, material standards and descriptions in other articles as applicable. Use of such phrases as “or equal,” “approved equal” or similar phrases may cause ambiguity in specifications. Such phrases require verification (procedural, legal and regulatory) and assignment of responsibility for determining “or equal” products.

1. Description: Through-wall style [natural gas] [liquid petroleum] heating and electric cooling SPVU [with direct gas venting and safety interlock].

a. Ensure gas units are equipped with burner clear view sight glass.

b. Electrical Components, Devices and Accessories: Listed and labeled by a qualified testing agency to NFPA 70 and marked for intended location and application.

c. Serviceable slide out furnace assembly with stainless steel heat exchanger.

d. Serviceable slide out cooling chassis with Coremax refrigeration service ports.

e. Five-speed DC blower motor.

f. Secondary condensate drain.

2.4 MATERIALS

A. Cabinet: Pre-painted 22 gauge galvanized steel with painted tan finish.

C. Air Filter: 16 x 25 x 1 inch.

D. Fans and Motors: Removable.

2. Evaporator Blower Wheel: Directly connected to motor.

4. Wiring Termination: Motor factory-wired to control deck.

E. Electrical Requirements: Factory wired for 208-230 V, single phase, 60 Hz with low voltage rated 24 V, 60 Hz Class 2 transformer included with unit.

1. Operating voltage: 193-253 V with single pole contractor.

2.5 ACCESSORIES

A. Ductwork: In accordance with Section [23 31 13 - Metal Ducts].

1. Return Boot: Two piece convertible (left/right) return air boot for top return air designs, Model CPRB.

B. Gas Piping: In accordance with Section [23 11 23 - Facility Natural-Gas Piping] [23 11 26 - Facility Liquefied-Petroleum Gas Piping].

C. Wall Sleeve: Field assembled pre-painted aluminum casing with galvanized steel casing, Model CPWS.

1. Wall Sleeve Dimensions: 16 × 29 1/16 × 44 15/16 inches.

D. Caulking: In accordance with Section [07 92 00 - Joint Sealants].

E. Flashing: In accordance with Section [07 65 00 - Flexible Flashing].

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verification of Conditions: Verify that conditions of substrate previously installed under other sections or contracts are acceptable for drainage and protection system installation in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations.

1. Visually inspect substrate in presence of consultant.

2. Ensure rough openings are in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations.

3. Inform consultant of unacceptable conditions immediately upon discovery.

4. Proceed with installation only after unacceptable conditions have been remedied and after receipt of written approval to proceed from consultant.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install wall sleeve in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations.

B. Install unit in wall sleeve in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations.

C. Caulk exterior of unit [and wall sleeve] to substrate in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendation and with Section [07 92 00 - Joint Sealants].

1. Ensure weep hole openings in exterior front section of unit base pan are clear and open for drainage of unit.

Specifier Note: Retain the following paragraph for gas-fired units only. Delete if specified units are all electric with no gas components.

D. Add flashing in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and in accordance with Section [07 65 00 - Flexible Flashing].

3.3 VENTING

Specifier Note: Retain the following paragraph for gas-fired units only. Delete if specified units are all electric with no gas components.

A. Locate gas vents in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations and to [NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1].

3.4 CONNECTIONS

A. Connect ductwork in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations [and with [Section 23 31 13 - Metal Ducts]].

Specifier Note: Retain the following paragraph for gas-fired units only. Delete if specified units are all electric with no gas components.

B. Connect gas piping in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations [and with Section [23 11 23 - Facility Natural-Gas Piping] [23 11 26 - Facility Liquefied-Petroleum Gas Piping] ].

C. Connect drain pan to drainage system in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations [and with Section 22 13 00 - Facility Sanitary Sewerage].

D. Make electrical connections in accordance with manufacturer’s written recommendations and to NFPA 70.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Field Inspection: Coordinate field inspection in accordance with Section [01 45 00  Quality Control].

B. Clearance Tolerances:

1. Follow manufacturer’s written recommendations for clearance at exterior of unit for unobstructed air flow around unit.

2. Follow manufacturer’s written recommendations for clearance at interior of unit for maintenance purposes.

3. Follow manufacturer’s written recommendations for minimum vertical and horizontal clearance between units.

Specifier Note: Specify requirements if manufacturers are to provide field quality control with onsite personnel for instruction or supervision of product installation, application, erection or construction. Manufacturer field reports are included under PART 1, Submittals.

C. Manufacturer’s Services:

Specifier Note: Use the following paragraphs only when manufacturer’s field services are provided and are required to verify the quality of the installed components. Establish the number and duration of periodic site visits required by manufacturer and specify below. Contact National Comfort Products Inc. to determine any costs associated with technical representatives providing manufacturer’s field services. Delete if field services are not required.

1. Coordinate manufacturer’s services with Section [01 45 00 - Quality Control].

3.6 CLEANING

A. Perform daily progress cleaning.

1. Leave work area clean at end of each day.

B. Upon completion, remove surplus materials, rubbish, tools and equipment.

C. Collect recyclable waste and dispose of at appropriate recycling facilities.
