MyMediaMall E-books & Audiobooks

Apple, Android (version 4.0 or newer), Windows and Kindle Fire (Second Generation or newer) devices.

OverDrive’s MyMediaMall is an e-book and audiobook service that allows you to download files straight from their app onto your device. The following instructions are for any Apple device, any device having the Android system (which includes most mobile phones and Nooks), any device using the Windows 8 operation system (including phones & tablets), as well as any Kindle Fire that is Second Generation or newer. For Kindle users, the process to checkout items differs from those using Apple, Windows & Android devices once the item is checked out, so please follow these directions until notified to move on to the Kindle-friendly instructions. Other device users may also download Kindle books if they download and use the Kindle app.

Before you begin make sure you have your Crete library card handy. You will need to be in good standing (no fines over $5.00) to checkout material. You will also need to know your library PIN. This PIN can be created or updated by logging in to your SWAN account at http://catalog.swanlibraries.net/.

You will also need to be connected to the internet to use the app and complete setup.

Go to the app store located on your device. Once you’re there, search for OverDrive, where you will see the OverDrive Media Console app (pictured on right). Tap on “Install” and wait until the device has installed. Once finished, tap on Open.

When you first open the app, you will find the Welcome Screen (pictured left). This screen will prompt you to set up an OverDrive account which will allow you to sync OverDrive on multiple devices. If you already have an account with OverDrive, tap Sign In. If not, tap Sign up.

If you’ve previously used OverDrive before and did not have to create an account, you can do so now. Creating this account eliminates the need to sign up for the Adobe ID from previous versions of the app.

After tapping Sign up, you can either link OverDrive with your Facebook account, or you can enter basic details to create your own OverDrive account (as shown on the right). You just need to provide your name, email address and create a new password for the account. Once you are done, tap Sign up on the bottom of the screen (as pictured below).

The main OverDrive screen (pictured left) will appear after you’ve created your account. This screen will give you hints and instructions during your first time using the app.

Like the screen suggests, you can tap the OverDrive Icon on the top left to view the OverDrive Menu bar, or you can swipe your screen from left to right to make the OverDrive Menu appear.

There are also shortcut icons that appear on the upper right of your screen (pictured right). The icon of the books represents your Bookshelf, where all checked out and downloaded books appear. The icon with the Book and plus sign, presents the MyMediaMall page, where you can browse and checkout items.

Since this is the first time you are using the app, you can either tap on the OverDrive Icon, or swipe to the left to access the full OverDrive Menu screen.

The OverDrive Menu will appear on the left side of the screen. You can use the links seen here to navigate to your Bookshelf, Account, Settings and several other places.

You can always navigate back to this menu by tapping the OverDrive Icon, or swiping from left to right on your screen.

The first thing you need to do is add Crete Public Library to your list of available libraries. As long as you have a Crete Public Library card, you may add Crete as your library.

You can begin this task by tapping Add a library on the upper part of the menu.

A screen asking you to search via name, city or zip code will appear (pictured right). You can search using any of those options.

Once you tap Search, you will be shown your results. Crete Public Library should appear in your search results. Once you see it, tap the library’s name.

Crete’s collection of items is under the group, MyMediaMall.

If you tap on the star beside MyMediaMall, you will add the library as a favorite and will not have to search for and add Crete Library again.

Tapping on the entire line will bring you to the MyMediaMall homepage, where you can begin to browse and checkout items.

Above is the MyMediaMall main screen. This is where you can browse, search, access your account information, Sign In and many other things. MyMediaMall offers you the ability to search for items as well as browse using the black menu bar.

For your first time using this service, it’s important to know where you can Sign In! The Sign In option is located on the top right of the screen, circled in the picture above.

You will be asked to select your library from a list of Illinois libraries. Please tap to scroll down and tap on Crete Public Library when you find it.

You will then be shown the login page for Crete Public Library patrons. Type in your Crete Public Library card and your PIN. Remember, your PIN will be the same PIN you use on the SWAN catalog. To access, change or create your PIN, please visit http://catalog.swanlibraries.net/.

Once you have entered your information, click Sign In.

After login in you can begin browsing for items. Like regular materials, some items may require you to place a hold on them. Aside from e-books, MyMediaMall allows you to check out audiobooks, and some streaming videos. Each title is distinguished by icons on the upper right of the item’s picture. If this icon is black, the item is available; if it’s grayed out the item can be placed on hold. Crete Library takes part in the Advantage Collection, on the picture below there is an icon of a letter A and a plus sign, this means that Crete has purchased extra copies of this title just for Crete Library patrons. You can only view Advantage Titles when you are logged into your account.

Tapping on the item name will bring you to the Title Menu.

If the item is available, you will see a Borrow button; if not there will be the option for Hold instead. When you add an item to your hold list, you will be emailed when the item is available to checkout.

Before you tap to Borrow an item, looking at the right of the screen will show you what formats are available to download. Some items are only available as Kindle files, while the rest are available in both Kindle and EPUB formats. Kindle Books can only be read using a Kindle device or Kindle app. Adobe EPUB eBooks & Adobe PDF are the formats that can be read on all devices.

Once you know the item is available and in the format you need, you can tap on Borrow to checkout the item. After tapping on Borrow, you will be taken to the Bookshelf screen (pictured below). Your Bookshelf screen will always list the titles you currently have checked out. You can also access Holds, Lists, and Settings from this screen. You will also see a box that shows your current checkouts, and remaining checkouts. You can only have five (5) items checked out in OverDrive at any given time.

When you tap on the blue Download button, you will be given the choice of choosing your format. If you choose a Kindle Book or are using a Kindle Device please view the Kindle Books download page. If you are downloading the Adobe EPUB or another format, please continue with these instructions.

Once you tap on your chosen format, an option for Download will appear below. Tap on Download.

If you are using the Streaming Video option, instead of Download, you will click on Stream Video this opens the video and lets you begin streaming/viewing.

Once the item has Downloaded, you can continue browsing and checking out more material or you can view your checked out material.

To view the material, either tap on the OverDrive Icon, swipe to the left or tap on the Bookshelf icon on the top right, as shown on page 2.

Once the Menu appears, tap on Bookshelf (pictured left). This is where all checked out items are located, expect for Kindle Books and Streaming Video. All other items that were Checked Out and Downloaded will appear under this option.

Once on your Bookshelf you can view all the current e-books you have checked out (pictured right). Tapping on each title will allow you to access them. Underneath each title shows when the item expires. Once an item has expired, you will not longer be able to tap on it and it will automatically return itself. You may checkout the item again, as long as it does not have any Holds.

If you’d like to return your item early, you can tap and hold the item while on the Bookshelf screen. Depending on your device, either a pop up will appear, or the information will show up on the title’s icon (pictured below). If you tap Return, the item will be returned. If you tap Delete, the item will not be returned but instead Deleted from your device and returned when your checkout period expires.

If you have any questions, please call the library, 708-672-8017, where you can ask to set up a one on one e-reader help appointment.

The steps for downloading Kindle Books continue below. You can download Kindle Books if you are using a Kindle or if you download the Kindle app from your app store. You also need to have an Amazon account and if you’re using a Kindle, it has to be the account you registered your Kindle with. Before you can download an item, if you are using the Kindle app, you need to download and open the Kindle app and login with your Amazon account information (pictured right).

If you are not sure what Amazon account you have or what you used to registered your Kindle, you can call Amazon’s customer service number. The library does not have access to this information and can’t help you.

Once you have tapped Borrow and are taken to the Bookshelf page, you can choose to download the Kindle Book from the drop down menu (pictured right). Instead of Downloading the item right away when you click Confirm & Download, you will be taken to the Amazon website.

This is where you will need to know any login information for Amazon. The account you log in to needs to be the same account you log into on your app or on your Kindle device.

Once you are on the Amazon page, depending on your usage of Amazon, you might already be logged in to your Amazon account. The webpage will display your account information as “You are signed in as….” and display your email address above the option to Get Library Book (as seen on next page in picture). Also, above Your Account, it will display “Hello (your name)” as well. If you are not signed in, the button will simply read “Get library book.” Amazon will allow you to sign in after tapping that option.

If you are logged in, Amazon will ask you underneath, Get library book, where you would like your book delivered. If you have more the one Kindle device or have the Kindle app on several devices, you will have to choose which device you want your item delivered to.

If you tap on the arrow next to Deliver To, you will be shown a list of Kindle-related items you have registered your Amazon account with. If you are using a Kindle, you can tap the name of your Kindle (ie: Megan’s Kindle…), if you are using the Kindle app, it might say something like, “Megan’s Android Device” instead of an exact name (as seen on right).

If you were not signed in when first viewing Amazon, after you tapped Get a library book, you will also choose where your item will be delivered. Once the item is delivered you will receive a conformation page.

For Kindle users, the item will appear on your Kindle bookshelf (as seen in the background of the photo below). At no point will a Kindle book appear in the Overdrive app. To access the item in the Kindle app, go back to the Home page and open the Kindle app. Your item should appear within the Kindle app. If it doesn’t, you might have to Sync the Kindle app.

To get to the Sync option, you have to access Kindle’s menu, by taping either the Home icon on the left, or swiping left to right on your screen. Once there, you can tap Sync, to see if your MyMediaMall item will appear.

To return Kindle Books early, you need to use your device (or personal computer) to access www.amazon.com. Kindle Books can’t be returned using the Overdrive or Kindle apps. Once you are at Amazon’s home page, you need to sign in with your Amazon account. Using the same drop down menu you used to sign in, click on Mange Your Content & Devices.

Once you are at the Manage Your Content & Devcies page, you will see a list of Kindle Book titles that you checked out and that you might have purchased (pictured below). Items that you’ve borrowed will have Borrowed next to them. Tap or click on the Select option next to the title. Once highlighed, select the Action button.

Once clicked or tapped, a small menu will appear. You will have a few different options, but to return your item, simply click or tap on Return this book.

If you don’t return your borrowed Kindle books, they will automatically return at the end of your borrowing peroid.

Once you have selected Return this book, another menu alert will appear asking to confirm your return. Once you tap Yes, the item will be returned. Amazon will also alert you via email that you have returned your item, as well as alert you when your checkout period has expired and the item has been returned.
