Technology Days 2012: Major focus on production efficiency

Lossburg. In 2012, Arburg is placing the overarching topic of production efficiency at the centre of all its activities. Efficient production means achieving optimum product quality at minimum unit cost. In order to achieve this goal, the entire value-added chain must be taken into account. This topic will be presented by Arburg jointly with selected partners in a special exhibition area at this year’s Technology Days.
The holistic view ranges from product design, as well as mould, machine and peripheral technology, including configuration, through to process integration, process control and production planning. The potential for increasing production efficiency by reducing cycle times, enhancing energy efficiency and optimising production organisation will be demonstrated based on practical examples during the Technology Days.
Product design

The component design and material can have a positive influence on energy efficiency and the cycle times for injection moulding production. In this context, BASF SE will be presenting a new material with improved flow characteristics, Ultramid B3WG6 High Speed (PA 6 with 30% glass fibres). The improved flow properties of this thermoplastic material permit a lower processing temperature, resulting in several benefits with regard to time, cost and energy savings.

Carl Zeiss will also be presenting a metrotomography application to illustrate the topic of quality as a key criterion for efficient moulded part production. This innovative, non-destructive procedure enables the development process to be significantly shortened, while also analysing quality during the production process and visualising component defects. Scanning the moulded parts in a measuring booth enables a diagnostic quality analysis to be performed in a very short space of time.
Mould technology

Mould technology has an enormous influence on cost efficiency. Short cycle times, high productivity and consistent quality place major demands on mould manufacturers. Foboha will be exhibiting a number of different innovative solutions at the Technology Days, catering for quality-critical sectors such as packaging and medical technology.
Machine technology

Arburg is also exhibiting its latest innovation in the machine technology sector: The productivity package for the Allrounder Golden Edition hydraulic series. This includes the Arburg energy-saving system (AES) with variable speed pump drive and a water-cooled drive motor. The advantages here are a reduction in energy requirements by up to 20 percent, five percent shorter dry run times, and minimised emissions. This exhibit will be used to process flow-enhanced material from BASF SE and to display energy requirements using the Selogica “energy measurement” function. This control option records and analyses both the average and the periodic power consumption of the running injection moulding process, enabling detailed optimisation in terms of energy requirements.
Peripheral technology

In addition to the injection moulding machine itself, peripherals also impact on efficiency in production. This also includes temperature control. In the current process, temperature control in the mould offers plenty of scope for optimisation, enabling temperatures and the quantity of cooling water to be selected in accordance with the application. However, it is even more efficient to incorporate near-contour mould cooling during the planning phase to achieve a positive influence on the cycle time. Contura MTC is using a number of different exhibits to show how near-contour mould cooling can be implemented in even the most confined spaces.
Configuration

Product-specific dimensioning is the decisive issue for all technical components. Arburg’s cost-effectiveness calculator is an important tool for configuring machines for specific moulded parts, comparing drive concepts and calculating the all-important unit costs and amortisation periods.
Process integration

The integration of upstream and downstream production processes is growing in importance in an effort to produce parts in a cost-efficient manner. Because of their high degree of flexibility, six-axis robotic systems are increasingly being used here and Arburg has a solution designed specifically for this purpose. The robotic systems are directly connected to the Selogica machine control system and the Selogica user interface is also implemented on the robotic system controls. A workshop has been organised to allow visitors to see for themselves just how quickly and easily the six-axis robotic systems can be programmed.

In addition to increasing process integration, smaller batch sizes and moulded parts with individual decoration will be in demand in the future. One impressive example of this is the inline printing application presented by Arburg in association with FPT Robotik. The production cell consists of an electric Allrounder 370 E, a six-axis robotic system and an inline printing system. What makes this so special is the so-called InkBot process from FPT Robotik, which combines digital printing and robotics. The turnkey system produces individual name plates in a cycle time of around 20 seconds (see the “Inline printing” press release).
Process control

Cycle times can be reduced through simultaneous movements. This applies both to the machine and robotic systems themselves, as well as to their interaction. Arburg will provide practical examples of the potential of the Selogica control system for optimising the entire process sequence.

The control system can also help with set-up tasks, thanks to the Selogica “Set-up Assistant” module. This enables hydraulic, hybrid and electric Allrounder injection moulding machines to be set up simply, quickly and reliably without special detailed knowledge of the control system. The module provides menu guidance for the installation technician from the mould change to the finished sequence.
Production planning

Ensuring consistently high product quality, optimising production capacity utilisation, minimising downtimes and thereby ultimately enhancing the efficiency of production will become increasingly important in the future. Arburg’s host computer system (ALS) will show how this objective can be achieved with centralised production planning and control. The system offers a comprehensive overview of the entire production and rapid, reliable access to current data relating to ongoing injection moulding production. ALS enables both effective planning and implementation of injection moulding production.
