GMC Chicago Auto Show Press Conference
February 8, 2012
TONY (DiSalle, U.S. Vice President of GMC Marketing)
Thank you and good morning. I'm glad you could join us.
I'm here today to reveal the new 2013 GMC Acadia, but first I want to talk briefly about the strength of the GMC line-up.
GMC is GM's #2 volume brand in North America.
Total GMC sales were up 19% in 2011… and retail sales were up 16% over 2010… beating the industry average by about 4 percentage points. And as an indication of the health of the brand, every GMC vehicle line posted a sales increase in 2011.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the innovative, segment-leading products that GMC has to offer.
Our best-selling vehicle and the cornerstone of the brand is our Sierra full-size pickup.
The Sierra 1500 offers real capability along with segment-leading V-8 fuel economy.
And Sierra HD offers the best towing and payload capacity in the Heavy Duty segment.
Combined Sierra sales were up 15% for 2011.
In the full-size SUV segment, Yukon and Yukon XL are strong entries with sales up 25% in 2011.
Now, while trucks and SUVs will continue to be the foundation of the GMC brand, we're building on our professional grade heritage and expanding our offerings with flexible and efficient crossovers. And they're resonating in the market.
The GMC Terrain has captured the attention of buyers with its bold looks and segment-leading 32 mpg highway fuel economy. It appeals to customers who want the capability and flexibility of an SUV in an efficient package.
Terrain sales jumped 37% last year… and more than half of those buyers were new to GM.
Our first crossover, the GMC Acadia has been winning over new customers with its award-winning combination of space, capability, and fuel-efficiency. It had its best year ever last year with total sales up 16% over 2010.
Like Terrain, more than half of Acadia buyers are conquests.
Acadia has also maintained high resale values, earning recognition from the likes of ALG and Kelley Blue Book.
So when it came time to update the Acadia for 2013, our designers and engineers knew they faced a challenge. They needed to improve upon a vehicle that defined a segment and has surged in popularity since the day it was introduced.
But our team was up to the challenge.
And so it is my pleasure to introduce… the 2013 GMC Acadia.
The 2013 Acadia retains everything that customers love about the current model… and adds enhanced style, safety and technology to make this the best Acadia yet.
There's a bold new face with a new grille and signature LED lighting… more pronounced fender flares… and a seamless glass-to-glass design around the back.
We've upgraded the interior with soft-touch materials, contrast stitching, accents of red ambient lighting, and more comfortable front seats with new adjustable head restraints.
Plus there's all the convenience and flexibility that Acadia is known for: the most interior space in its class, comfortable seating for 7 or 8 passengers, and segment-leading cargo volume.
We've also improved drivability for 2013... with transmission updates that include controls and hardware to enhance performance and efficiency.... and suspension tuning with new dampening controls for more refined ride and handling.
And we've added the latest technologies: Like standard Color Touch Radio with high definition screen… Bluetooth and Rear Vision Camera.
Available technologies include GMC's new IntelliLink system that adds voice control and seamless smart phone integration to your infotainment options. And there's Side Blind Zone Alert and Cross Traffic Alert.
Two radar-based systems designed to alert drivers to hazards that are sometimes difficult to see.
The redesigned Acadia will also be the first vehicle on the market with GMC's new front center air bag system. This exclusive feature adds another level of cushioning between driver and front passenger in side impacts.
Now, I bet you didn't expect us to reveal this next vehicle today.
In 2010 we broadened Acadia's appeal to luxury customers with the Acadia Denali.
Today, about 30% of Acadia sales are Denali.
We expect that percentage to grow in coming years, helped by the introduction of our next new model…the 2013 Acadia Denali.
The 2013 Acadia Denali takes the comfort and style of Acadia to a new level.
The redesigned signature chrome grille and 20-inch machined wheels are just an indication of the extensive list of standard features that puts Acadia Denali in a class of its own. There's a new power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, color touch navigation, and much, much more.
Both the 2013 Acadia and Acadia Denali will arrive in dealer showrooms towards the end of this year.
Now, I'd like to ask a few experts to join me up here on stage… there's Dave Lyon Executive Director of GMC Design… Ray Chess, the Global Vehicle Line Executive for Acadia… And Sue Eckel, Vehicle Chief Engineer and Vehicle Line Director.
We'll all be happy to take your questions.
Thank you for your attention.
Now please come up to take a closer look.
