System Recommendation - Optimal : Intel Pentium 75 MHz or higher 16 MB of RAM Quad Speed (4x) CD-ROM Drive (600,000 bytes/second transfer rate) PCI SVGA video card (640x480x256) The most recent DirectX2 drivers for your system 100% Microsoft compatible mouse 82 MB of hard disk space Sound Blaster or 100% compatible sound card for Digital FX/Music Joystick (Flightstick Pro, Thrustmaster, Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro) [1.2] Features + Utilizes Microsoft DirectX library! + Full digital music and sound effects for all three games! + Instrumental orchestrations of music by the Wing Commander III and Wing Commander IV Composer, George Oldziey! Wing Commander I and II Specific Features + Optional full screen mode for enhanced visibility! Wing Commander III Specific Features + Throttle and rudder pedal support for Wing Commander III! When set up in the Joystick Properties, the throttle and rudder pedals can be used in Wing Commander III for Windows 95. The throttle will affect your set speed, and the rudder pedals will roll your ship. Additionally, when selecting the Control Type, you can choose from Keyboard, Mouse, and whatever joystick you have selected in the Windows 95 Control Panel. + Play the game full-screen or in a window! (Wing Commander III) If you are running a desktop resolution of 800x600 or higher, you have the option of running the game in a window. Use [ALT][ENTER] to switch between Windowed and Full-screen mode. When running in a window, if your desktop is running in 256 colors and the game is running in 16-bit color, you may experience odd colors. Simply switch your desktop resolution to 16-bit color. Consult your Windows 95 documentation for information on how to switch your desktop resolution. + With the correct setup, the frame rate will be faster on high-end machines compared to the DOS version! (Wing Commander III) + Impressive scaling technology used to "simulate" SVGA with low-res graphics! (Wing Commander III) The low-resolution mode (was VGA) of Wing Commander III renders the game to a 320x240 window and uses DirectDraw to scale the game to 640x480 before drawing the HUD. Frame-rate switch is on by default, which means that in low frame rate situations, the game will automatically switch to low-res. In combat, this is not noticeable, and will help to improve gameplay speed. [ALT][1-4] will not change the resolution from VGA to SVGA. They are now used as follows : [ALT][1] Low-resolution without page-flipping [ALT][2] Low-resolution with DirectDraw page-flipping [ALT][3] High-resolution without page-flipping [ALT][4] High-resolution with DirectDraw page-flipping The options screen still uses the term VGA, but in Wing Commander III for Windows 95, it is referring to the low-resolution mode. + Command-line parameters for added customization [1.3] Wing Commander III Command-line Parameters -d Force hardware double buffering off -- essentially disables the speed gain of DirectDraw, and draws the screen similar to the DOS version. This is on by default. -no_interlace Do not draw the "black lines" between each line of the movies. -no_sound Disable DirectSound -dead_zone=# Increase or decrease the dead zone for greater joystick precision. By default, the dead zone is 1. Using a value of 0 will turn the dead zone off, and using a value of 3 will make the game respond similar to the DOS version. For example, -dead_zone=0 will turn off the dead zone. To use command line parameters for Wing Commander III, you will need to run the game from the DOS prompt. 1 Open an MS-DOS Prompt window. (Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt) 2 Change to the drive/directory where Wing Commander III is installed. Default is "C:\Program Files\Kilrathi Saga\WC3" C: and press [ENTER] CD \PROGRA~1 and press [ENTER] CD KILRAT~1 and press [ENTER] CD WC3 and press [ENTER] 3 Add parameters (with a space between them) after WC3W.EXE on the command line. For example : wc3w.exe -dead_zone=0 -no_interlace and press [ENTER] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [2.0] Installation Notes We have encountered several computers that will automatically reboot or lockup during the automatic installation of DirectX 2. Reset the computer and try to run the game. If the user is caught in a cycle of continual DirectX2 installation, try installing DirectX2 from the DXSETUP program. If that does not work, try fully removing DirectX manually and reinstall. If that does not work, contact Origin Customer Service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [3.0] DirectX II [3.1] What is DirectX? DirectX is a set of 32 bit software drivers for your computer's peripherals such as your sound card or video card. These drivers are used to display video and play sounds. Without DirectX, the game will not function, and without using the latest DirectX drivers, game performance will be affected. DirectX is a Microsoft product. It is important to note that unsupported or outdated DirectX drivers may cause your computer to lockup or crash. You will need to contact Microsoft for support of DirectX. Microsoft Corporation PHONE 1-800-426-9400 BBS 1-206-936-6735 WEBSITE www.microsoft.com/win95 DirectX is a Microsoft product. It is important to note that unsupported or outdated DirectX drivers may cause the computer to lockup or crash. You will need to contact Microsoft for support of DirectX. Specific hardware manufacturers need to be contacted for updated or new DirectX drivers. It is recommended that these hardware manufacturers are contacted FIRST. [3.2] How do I determine if DirectX is installed? 1 Double-click My Computer. 2 Right-click on the CD-ROM disc icon. 3 Click Explore. 4 Double-click DirectX. 5 Double-click DXSETUP.EXE. All components of DirectX should be certified. If this is not the case, you will need to contact your video or sound card manufacturer for the latest DirectX drivers. [3.3] How do I make sure I have the most recent version? 1 Double-click My Computer. 2 Right-click on the CD-ROM disc icon. 3 Click Explore. 4 Double-click DirectX. 5 Double-click DXSETUP.EXE. Under the version column, DirectDraw and DirectSound should be at least version 4.03.00.1096. You will need to contact your video or sound card manufacturer to make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers. [3.4] How do I reinstall DirectX? Run DXSETUP and click "Reinstall DirectX." [3.5] How do I remove DirectX? DirectX is a one-way install. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [4.0] Known Problems *Using Multiple Keys at the Same Time* There is a keyboard problem where you cannot use more than a few keys pressed at the same time. This makes keyboard flight difficult. There is currently nothing that can be done about this. Sometimes, it is difficult to eject. Simply try pressing [CTRL][E] multiple times. *Unintentional Task-Switching* Another problem that exists is afterburning [TAB] and using the wingman hotkeys [ALT][key]. This will often task-switch you out of the application due to the use of [ALT][TAB] in Windows. You can simply task-switch back and continue. *Joystick Calibration* Using [ALT][C] or clicking on Calibrate in the Control Parameters or Spaceflight Options Menu will not invoke joystick calibration. Instead, these will "re-center" the joystick. The joystick should be calibrated while the game is running. Section 5.1 details how to calibrate the joystick. *Display* Certain S3/ATI cards will show a random "HUD flash" that occurs with some video cards. When this "flash" occurs, for one frame, it appears that the HUD is not being drawn correctly. There is currently nothing that can be done about this. *Audio* The Pro Audio Studio 16 experienced sound problems during testing. We were not able to resolve the problem with the latest DirectX drivers. The Sound Blaster 1.0 8-bit sound card will not work with the Kilrathi Saga. *Screen Saver* Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga does not disable your screen saver. It is possible that your screen saver may kick in during long cinematic sequences. It is a good idea to turn off your screen saver before playing Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga. *Joystick Drifting* If your joystick is not working correctly, it may not be set up correctly in the Control Panel. For the best results, the joystick should be set up while the game is running. 1 Start Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga for Windows 95. 2 When in gameflow or spaceflight, task-switch to the desktop with [ALT][TAB]. 3 Double-click My Computer. 4 Double-click Control Panel. 5 Double-click Joystick, which will bring up the Joystick Properties. 6 Make sure your Joystick configuration is correct. 7 If you have trim knobs, center them. 8 Click Calibrate. Follow the instructions to calibrate your joystick. 9 Task switch back to Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga for Windows 95 ([ALT][TAB]). Whenever the joystick starts to drift, press [ALT][C] in the game to re-center the joystick. *Gameplay or Movie Pausing* Assuming you meet the minimum requirements, DirectX may not have been successfully installed on your system. If the DirectX driver is not installed for any of your system's components, Win 95 attempts to emulate a driver, causing a loss of performance. Consult section 3.0, DirectX. Another problem that may exist is that a 32-bit CD-ROM driver may not be in use. Many times, if a real mode driver is loaded in the CONFIG.SYS, the 32-bit CD-ROM driver will not load. You can check this by : 1 Open the Control Panel. 2 Double-click System. 3 Click Performance. If you see a message in the white box that states "Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance," this is an indication letting you know there may be a real mode CONFIG.SYS driver that is interfering with performance. The most likely candidate is a real-mode CD-ROM driver. Contact your CD-ROM manufacturer for a Windows 95 driver. *My sound is distorted during movies or gameplay* The audio hardware may not be fully supported by DirectX2. You will have to contact your hardware manufacturer for newer Windows 95 and/or DirectX2 drivers. Cards we have encountered this problem on are the Ensoniq Soundscape, the Sound144/288, and cards using the Crystal Sound Chip. There is currently no solution to this problem. *My video is distorted or off center* It could be that your video card drivers for DirectX (DirectDraw) are unsupported or out of date. Consult your video card manufacturer for the latest DirectX drivers. *The game gives me an error and quits back to Windows* The first step is determining the error : *Error : Full screen mode init failed. Refer to the README.TXT about conflicts with desktop settings* Your video drivers currently do not support running the game. Switching your desktop color depth to at least 256 colors should allow you to run the game. To change your desktop color depth : 1 Right-click My Computer. 2 Double-click Control Panel. 3 Double-click Display. 4 Click Settings. 5 Click on the Color Palette drop-box and select 256 colors or higher. 6 Click OK. *Wing III : Selecting Flightstick Pro or Thrustmaster in the Options Menu will cause the setting to revert to Joystick.* Since we are using the Windows 95 joystick routines, there is only one selection. The hat/throttle/rudder pedals will be used if applicable. Ensure that these options are selected in the Windows 95 Joystick Control Panel. *Wing III : Mouse cursor "leaking" through the cinematic sequences* This only happens on very few machines. There is no solution to this problem. Simply move your mouse to the edge of the screen. *Error : A required .DLL file xxx.DLL not found.* Reinstall DirectX2 using the instructions in section 3, DirectX. *Other Errors* You may try the following options to see if they allow you to run the game. 1 It may be a good idea to make sure your hard drive is in good order. To do this, you may want to run Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter To access Scandisk, click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scandisk. To access Disk Defragmenter, click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter. Follow the instructions on screen. 2 Try shutting down these other applications and run the game again. 3 Delete any unnecessary files and directories to give Windows more disk space for virtual memory. 4 Allow Windows 95 to manage the virtual memory or increase the amount of virtual memory Windows is set to use. After this has been completed, try re-installing the game. If this does not help, and you have exhausted all possible options, feel free to contact Origin Technical Support. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [5.0] Miscellaneous Issues *Which components of DirectX are used by Kilrathi Saga?* KSAGA uses both DirectDraw and DirectSound. *WINDOWS NT 4.0* It is not known whether the game will run under Windows NT 4.0. It has not been tested. *DIRECTX 1.0* Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga for Windows 95 IS NOT backward compatible with DirectX 1.0. You must have and use DirectX2. *DIRECTX3* There is no guarantee that future versions of DirectX will work with the game. Microsoft has stated that the future versions of DirectX should be backward- compatible. You may have to reinstall and use DirectX2 for Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga for Windows 95 if it is determined that it is incompatible with DirectX3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [6.0] Hardware Tested with Wing Commander : The Kilrathi Saga for Windows 95 SOUND CARDS Ensoniq Soundscape Ensoniq Soundscape (Plug n Play) Gravis UltraSound Media Vision Pro / Premium 3D Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum 16 / Basic Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum 16 / Studio with SCSI Phone Blaster Sound 28.8 AMSP Sound Blaster 1.5 (8-bit) Sound Blaster 16 Basic (ASP/No ASP) Sound Blaster 16 VE (Value Edition) Sound Blaster 2.0 (8-bit) Sound Blaster AWE 32 PNP Sound Blaster AWE32 Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 Soundscape Elite Vibra 16 VIDEO CARDS ATI Graphics Ultra Pro (Mach 32) ATI Mach 64 PCI Cardex Cirrus CL-GD54xx/542x Windows Accelerator Cirrus GD54xx VGA Diamond SpeedStar Pro SE (PCI) Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM (S3) PCI Diamond Stealth SE Genoa Phantom 32I Hercules Terminator Imagine 128 Matrox MGA MGA Millennium Motion 531 Number Nine GXE64 PCI - 1 MB Number Nine Motion 771 - 4MB On board Cirrus Logic GD5434 Paradise (Western Digital) STB Velocity 64 OPERATING SYSTEMS Windows 95 Windows 95 + DriveSpace 2.0 Windows 95 + Microsoft Plus Windows 95 + Microsoft Plus + DriveSpace 3.0 MOUSES MicroSoft Logitech SCSI AND PROPRIETARY CONTROLLER CARDS Adaptec 1522 Adaptec 1542 Adaptec 2940 PCI NCR PCI Sound Blaster 16 MCD Sound Blaster 16 SCSI2 RAM 8 12 16 20 24 32 72 CD-ROM DRIVES Mitsumi 2x IDE Mitsumi 4x IDE Nec 2x IDE Nec 2x SCSI Nec 3x SCSI Nec 4x SCSI Plextor 4x SCSI Sony 4x IDE Teac 6x IDE Texel SCSI 2x Toshiba 2x SCSI GAME CARDS ACM Game Card Advanced Gravis Gamecard CH Gamecard III Automatic Kraft Gamecard Interact Gamecard Quickshot JOYSTICKS CH FlightStick CH FlightStick Pro F15 E Talon F16 FLCS Gravis Kraft Kraft Thunderstick Logitech WingMan Extreme Microsoft Sidewinder Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro Quickshot Warrior 5 ThrustMaster FCS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [7.0] Sound Card and Video Card Manufacturers [7.1] Sound Card Manufacturers Acer PRODUCT Magic S20, S22, and MP23 Sound Cards BBS (408)383-2770 WEBSITE ftp://ftp.acer.com/aceropen/sounds/.
