|TechUpdate - New System x update methodology - UXSP, Update Manager & UXSPI|
In the beginning of 2007, IBM started to deliver System updates (BIOS, Firmware and drivers) in new packaging format called UXSP.
UpdateXpress System Packs contain bundles of Windows and Linux on-line firmware and driver updates, for each System x and Blade server.
For every machine-type/operating system combination IBM publish a UpdateXpress System Pack.
Till today IBM published UXSP for the following systems: x3105, x3200, x3250, x3550, x3650, HS20, HS21, HS21xm, LS20, LS21 and LS41.
Download the UXSP from the IBM support site:
There are two method of deploying UXSP, using IBM Director Update Manager and Software distribution or using UpdateXpress System Packs Installer.
IBM Director - Update Manager
Use the Update Manager task to create and manage update profiles for system and firmware updates for System x™ servers and IBM® BladeCenter® products. You can create profiles that manage individual updates or profiles that manage UpdateXpress System Packs.
For more information on how to use the IBM Director update manager task refer to the IBM Director documentation, Available in the IBM Director CD or in the on-line publication in the link below:

UpdateXpress System Pack Installer
UpdateXpress System Pack Installer supports a number of hardware components (Windows® and Linux® device drivers and firmware) that are included in available UpdateXpress System Packs.
A current list of supported components can be found in the UpdateXpress System Packs readme file that is included with each system pack.
UpdateXpress System Pack Installer is supported on x86 architecture systems only. It runs on both Linux and Windows operating systems.
You can use the UpdateXpress System Pack Installer from the command-line interface (CLI) or the graphical user interface (GUI).
Regardless of whether you run UpdateXpress System Pack Installer from the CLI or the GUI, it follows the same step-by-step process: inventory, query, compare, and then deployment.
